What is IPA?
The International Phonetic Alphabet gives every speech sound its own symbol, so a word’s pronunciation can be written exactly, whatever its spelling. English spelling is famously unreliable (think of though, through and tough), which is why dictionaries and language teachers use IPA.
Reading the symbols
The mark ˈ comes before the stressed syllable: computer is /kəmˈpjutɚ/. ə (schwa) is the relaxed “uh” sound in most unstressed syllables. θ is the “th” in think and ð the “th” in this. ʃ is “sh” and ŋ is the “ng” in sing.
Which accent is this?
The converter uses General American pronunciation, based on the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. Word pages on Englishfied also show British pronunciation where we have it.
